Hi Gary,
I recently used a two element (10, 12, 15, 17, 20m) Lightning Bold quad
antenna for a 3 day ham radio event up in the NC mountains. We used the
antenna on a radio shack push up tower ( up only about 12 feet from the
bottom wires) and it worked great. As compared to a G5RV we had up, signal
strengths were several S units stronger (in the direction the antenna was
pointed). Most reports we received were a consistent 59. I realize a
comparison against a G5RV is not ideal, but that is what we had up. We
primarily used 17 and 20m.
It is heavy antenna and we had great difficulty putting it up attempting to
use the full length of the tower (36 feet). The radio shack tower was
simply too flimsy for the antenna. However, we did spectacularly let it
crash down a few times on the ground and the antenna held up great. So, I
would give it a thumbs up with regards to ice. Be sure to put it on a
strong tower structure though. We were using the aluminum wire that comes
with the antenna.
We were quite lucky and we got the antenna used for $150 and just had to buy
the wire needed for the elements. Recall the website is:

Let me know if you have any additional questions about the antenna, I would
be happy to share.

John, AG4GG
