[Antennas] Stacked beams

Here is a question I have always had.  Many hams stack beams on a tower 
such as some of the great DX
club stations with their 6 over 6 over 6, etc.  What would be the 
difference between a 6 over 6 on a tower
and a 6 on one tower and another 6 on a second tower.  In either case both 
beams fed together.  It seems to me that
the 2 tower system would be better as it would be possible to beam in 2 
directions at once.  Would appreciate any comments.  I may be all wrong on 
the gain characteristics of a single tower opposed to two towers with 
identical beams.
