Gosh, Eugene... I certainly didn't say that.
My meaning is more that it's inaccurate to portray sending a
"please unsubscribe me" message to the list as a manner in
which to unsubscribe. No such outcome is assured. The list
manager(s) may, or may not, choose to intervene on behalf of
anyone who attempts to unsubscribe that way; they are not
obligated to. Given that it won't necessarily happen (not
to mention the fact that it might be viewed as an imposition
to expect it to happen), it seems to me that we should avoid
speaking of it as if it were simply one of the viable options
for unsubscribing from the list.
While I'm at it, I'll add that we should especially avoid any
possible appearance of suggesting that sending a "please
unsubscribe me" message to the list might be a good way to
protest things we don't like about the way the list is being
run. A certain percentage of "please unsubscribe me" messages
sent to any list are sent by technically competent people who
know full well how to unsubscribe in the correct manner, but
are attempting to make some kind of thinly veiled statement
of discontent. I really have no idea whether your post I was
replying to actually intended to encourage that sort of thing,
but it certainly could be construed that way.
My reply to your post was simply meant to discourage people
from thinking that sending a "please unsubscribe me" message
to the list is an acceptable method of unsubscribing. It is
not.
