Demetre,
I am sure you are referring to verticals with diamond shaped top loadingng
hats that were popular on cargo ships - mostly the Eastern European built
ones. There usually are/were 10m tall verticals with the enormous capacitive
hats, with a hula hoop in the middle. I have had these aboard ships that
sailed in some of the worst North Atlantic winters. In fact, it was only the
other night I was watching a home video taken during a storm. I had shot the
antenna in the wind - to demonstrate how severe the storm was!
Now that most of the older antennas are being replaced by GMDSS antennas
with auto tuners at the base, you might find one of these elements around
Parama or Drapetzona shipyards in Piraeus.
Hopefully someone might have some ideas to reduce winload on your system. I
had to put out my 2c worth as I think these are what you see on boats you
refer to - and for nostalgic reasons too!

Ron, 4S7RO/6Y5

Subject: [Antennas] loop vertical antenna ?

6 wires laid around the antenna as counterpoise plus direct ground. The
results are acceptable.
> While watching my vertical being bend by snowstorm winds (worst in the
last 50 years) I thought of maybe changing the vertical element to a
different shape for less wind resistance and maybe better radiation.
> I remember seeing some diamond shaped antennas on boats that resembled a
diamond shaped loop strung on the main mast going upwards on one side and
down the other.
> Would a similar shaped antenna radiate better compared to a plain vertical
element of the same hight ?
