Hi Gang,
I just thought I'd drop my 2 cents in on this.
The antenna above is a great performer.
I think George W5YR also gave me good info on that but to make a long story
short I have to use coax.
Like everyone else I strive for the ultimate antenna.
But for the last 2 months I've been playing with home brew window antennas
and the best one is the one I made from a 9 foot long telescopic metal
fishing pole.
You need to take the pole apart and sand it down to bare metal.
I wound 45 turns on the cork handle and made my taps.
On 40 meters I just drop the counter poise straight down from my apartment on
the 4th floor.
On 20 meters I like to use the indoor counter poise since I have the room to
string it out.
Last night I was working QRP CW for over three hours and got many German
stations and 2 in Poland and several in Scotland.
The antenna seems very quite and all my reports are 459 and up.
I'm not antenna restricted but enjoy working and building the short antennas.
Don't under estimate them.
Just make sure you have a good ground.
When operating from the park I no longer use the long random wire.
I clamp the fishing pole antenna to the tail gate of my station wagon and
work DX on 20 meters.
The fishing pole is 29.95 at K-mart with some cheap lures and a reel.
I sold the reel for $20.00 and in less then three hours I had a working
window type antenna.
It telescopes down to a bit over 2 feet and sets up in less then 1 minute.
I hear K-Mart is closing up stores so look for that pole and you just may get
it at cost.
I may be on tonight at 0600 UTC.
Give a listen on the extra band.
Nice antenna to have around.
A local ham told me if I make up another coil and able to locate the right
place on the rod that it will work on 2 meters also so thats my next project.
