Does it cost something to run an email list? I didn't think it did
but maybe I am mistaken. I am retired from IT now but when I was
working, no IT professional I ever knew would have anything to do with
Facebook. It was regarded as a walled garden for people too
nontechnical to know how to create and stand up their own web pages on
a host. Further, Facebook gets hacked all the time. I still have
nothing to do with it.

I am unaware of this and I'd like to know more. The person who
started the QRZ AM forum was Billy N6YW, not Don KYV.
Re list activity dwindling, ALL email lists I know of have nowhere
near the activity they had 20 years ago. It's called SK hams.
Traditional ham activity is down all over. What's big is whatever
young hams like, which probably involves computers: FT8 and
contesting.
