That's what I hear, that ham radio isn't a commercial service
therefore should not have to pay a fee. I think that's a valid
argument. Another one is that kids can't afford the $50. On that
one, I think the fellows saying that still think kids finances have
not changed since 1965. Kids today aren't delivering morning papers.
They have money to blow on $200 sneakers, and $500 video games and
iPhones. $50 probably isn't unaffordable. But the fee could be
waived for anyone under 22 for example.
I've never subscribed to QEX but the days of QST being managed by hams
who were hired for their technical ability (Lew McCoy, Doug Demaw,
George Grammer, ...) seem gone.
