I think it's short sighted to shut down a hamfest permanently for a
temporary reason like Covid. I suspect such hamfests are failing
already, or the sponsoring organization is tired of doing it and Covid
provides cover to quit. Just my opinion. In around 2 years this
should all be in the rear view mirror. That time will fly by. It
always does. If China does another Covid the world will hammer them
down. But we developed a vaccine in 9 months. It can be done again.
The way forward if you ask me, is to hold hamfests after the vaccine
is in wide distribution and require proof along with the usual ticket
to get in. That's going to be the M.O. for virtually every single
commercial event and public transportation and will become the new
normal. Anti-Vax folks have the freedom to decline to be vaccinated,
but they will be shut out of every public event and many businesses.
Past Supreme Court cases have decided this. Most hams are probably in
the categories for high priority vaccination, will get it and be
ready. Estimates say that nearly everyone will have had an
opportunity to be vaccinated by end of May for the U.S. Dayton will
probably be able to go on. Some won't show up ("my freedoms; my
rights" etc.). It will be like the hams who quit going after DARA
told them they couldn't walk around the hamfest with guns. No
problem with the no-shows, but closing for good is a permanent
solution to a temporary problem. Unless there's more about it that
isn't being stated publicly.
Happy New Year
