I operate wherever my receiver dial, VFO, and license class allows me to
go. Unless you're looking for weak signal AM operating, it's very easy to
spot an AM signal in the phone band by just tuning around. Phone bands
aren't that big. Calling CQ hasn't gone out of style either, but its been
a long time since I've heard anyone on AM calling CQ. Generally I hear,
grunts, groans, testing, or some other phrases pop up on a frequency, and
sometimes an equal response ensues, initiating a start QSO.
