I have found that not all rack panels in older equipment follow the same standard. I acquired a pre-WWII Gates BC studio line amplifier, standard 19" panel width and what appeared to be standard panel height. When I tried to mount it in my standard relay rack, I found that the screw holes didn't line up. The vertical spacing was different, and I had to ream out the holes slightly with a chainsaw file (through 3/16" steel panel) to allow the screws to fit. It worked, but left a visible gap above or below the mounting screws that the screw-heads don't cover up.
