Well, with the solder blob method of enamel removing, it can't be one of those dinky 25 watt irons that barely melt solder like those used for solid state work.  Needs a 75 watter and up with a broad tip, or a solder gun.  It works especially well on the finer wire, larger stuff takes a bit more effort, #20  or larger, but those can be cleaned with an Xacto or sandpaper without fear of breaking.
