I agree, but it seems that problem is aggravated by those who think they can improve the factory schematic by increasing the bass response.  300-3000 was the factory spec for years, and it seemed to be OK for what the gear was intended for, communication, not shortwave BC'ing.  An unmodified and properly working Heathkit 'Scratchy' Apache, along with others of that vintage, are  Q5 copy when the signal is S3, but improved audio versions, most of the time sound like the op is speaking from the bottom of a mud hole and are unreadable.  At 20 over it may sound like the VOA, but not so at real world sig levels.
