Unless the interference was heard on the same frequency on several  
different radios with several different first intermediate  
frequencies, I am leaning
towards INTERNAL overload ( regardless of the $$$ of the radio ).

Second possibility... the local 1KW AM was creating a diode mix on a  
rusty wire some distance south of the receiver ( per beam heading ).

With RF .... things happen.
