If by "keyer" (to me a keyer is a CW key) you mean the time delay
circuit on the 500, I have been told it quits working over time
because of some sort of component deterioration.  I don't remember the
details because I don't own one and have no desire for one so it went
in one ear and out the other, but a 500 owner may be able to fill in
the blanks.
