This may not be the best or only way to test an old xtal mic element
(obviously trying it out on a high Z input rig is one way) but if you
have an oscilloscope and want to quickly check a mic you can just clip
it to one of the vertical inputs and ground, and reduce the v./div and
if the mic element is good it should drive the high Z scope channel
and you'll see it on the trace.  You can get an idea of the quality of
the mic audio reproduction by looking at the wave form and if you have
a way to generate low and high frequency sounds, you can check its
response.
