Hi Mark,
I'm not surprised in the least...
One time a coupla years ago I was stuck in a traffic jam in downtown Toronto: it gave me the opportunity to watch, first-hand, a parcel delivery guy make his "deliveries" to a fine china shop that he was (illegally) parked in front of. What a revelation THAT was...
The guy was standing on the elevator ramp at the back of a large cube truck, the elevator being some 5' above street level: he would pick up each parcel / box from inside the truck, hold it just beyond the edge of the ramp, & then "...bombs away." The packages dropped from that height right to the pavement.
Now, I know that rules for commercial carriers say something along the lines that your package must withstand a vertical drop of some 6', or so, but this sorta action goes way beyond what is necessary, IMHO...and I'll bet your tubes got the ol' "bombs away" treatment, too.
