The issue with trimming posts may be partly due to some webmail like
gmail suppressing previously sent included text so you only see the
currently written part of the mail--the trailing quoted stuff is only
seen if you click on a "show quoted text" button.

This may mean that some users are either not aware of it, or do not
see it as a problem.  If you use gmail  you never see the zillion
lines of quoted previous mails; only the part that is new at the top.
That's nice but it also means some gmail (and perhaps other webmail)
users click send without thinking to trim their posts.
