We don't have to be anything, Bernie. This is why you see so many
different types of conversations and operating styles on the bands. If
you and the folks in your group are okay discussing politics, the
economy, or whatever else, I see no more problem with that than
discussing new dentures, liver spots, your last doctor visit or what
you had for lunch.
The only problem I see comes from folks who join a group either
without listening or without consideration of the others and start
into a rant about xyz. No different really than hijacking a thread
online. It's just rude, and you're not going to change anyone's mind
at this stage of the game.
The Amateur Code of many decades ago is a good guideline for having
conversations with strangers on the air. It's not the law. Good taste
and common sense apply, and we all know that you can't legislate such
things, muchless enforce them. As with any other number of operators
or groups or conversations that folks gripe about online, the best
approach is to simply avoid what doesn't appeal to us rather than take
part in it, then later complain that others don't operate the way we
would. Complaining online works about as well as acknowledging someone
who is trying to jam your transmissions. But hey - maybe it lets some
people vent and feel better so they don't go kick their dog or beat
their wife or rob a liquor store? (o:
Time for more coffee.
