Welcome aboard, Bill.
The main reason for not getting into a confrontation on the air over
behavior is easy: we can't stop it that way, only make it worse or
more noticeable. Much of what you hear, though in bad taste, is legal.
And it's definitely not license class-specific, anymore than it's
band-specific or service-specific. Giving someone a piece of your mind
might feel good at the moment, but the chances of it having an impact
are slim to none, and at the end of the day, you're just out another
piece of mind. As one list member pointed out to me years ago, it's
like wrasslin' with a pig: all you get is dirty, and the pig likes it.
The best approach is to get on the air and avoid the behavior that you
find offensive. Start your own conversation or join another in
progress, and set a better example. Plenty of folks like to get on the
internet to complain, but are seldom or never heard operating. In my
view, this only adds to the problem. If everyone is on here griping
about the 'bad apples' who are on the air operating as others are
typing, well....the outcome is obvious.
Lead by example. As with jammers, don't give troublemakers the
satisfaction of confirmation by mentioning them on the air or on here.
That only feeds their ego. The say Talk is Cheap for a reason. Action
says so much more.
Above all else - don't let the few spoil it for you. There are many
others out there who will make your on air time enjoyable. Don't slip
into the habit of locking your dial on one frequency and you'll be
amazed at how much good stuff is waiting to be found.
Hope to work you soon -
