While carrier power is important in ham AM, the peak power as in
P.E.P. is not so important. After the antenna and carrier power are
the best for the available resources, the next most important thing is
actually the _average modulated power._ Getting the average up has to
be done with some sort of audio compression and limiting. That's how
readability and overcoming path and local noise are accomplished. Of
course the rig and everything in the path to the antenna have to be
able to support the high average power.
