I think the reference was to PDM (pulse duration modulation) vs. 
plate modulation,
although not mentioned.  PDM has been a BC standard for over 25 years and
is normally good for 125% positive modulation.

This method was described for ham use years ago in AM Press-Exchange, 
the predecessor
to Electric Radio.  Circuitry a bit more complex, but no iron required.
