Indeed. As pointed out, it's still a basically free country where no one is
forced to take part in any site or activity they don't want to. Like Jim
and John, I prefer the more direct approach as it's so much easier, more
enjoyable, and saves a lot of time. It may not yield the top dollar result
of an ebay auction, but top dollar is seldom my concern these days. OTOH,
ebay is a GREAT tool to have in the toolbox. You see things there you might
never come across otherwise. I found a missing crystal oscillator unit for
my 300G broadcast transmitter on there for $9.99 a few years back, after
resigning myself to the reality of having to build one to fill the gaping
hole. If I don't like the price or seller, I don't buy. Simple. But that
applies everywhere. Ebay, hamfests, ham radio, they're what you choose to
make of them.

One thing is certain: complaining about it to others solves nothing, and
only stirs up discontent. Took me a few years to figure it out, but
eventually I did.  (o:
