That's the conclusion I have came too.  A Separate  DDS unit, fed into the xtal socket,  would give the portability to work with the other BA rigs.
Thank's to all those who offered suggestions.  Much appreciated.
Now the project begins.

Hi Bill,
I've been considering the same thing for one of my 
AM transmitters.
As folks on the group have said, the VFO in Johnson 
transmitters are actually 
quite stable after a warm up period (approc 30 
min). If you do use a DDS
the best way to incorporate it is to build it in a 
seperate box and feed the
RF into the 'xtal' socket of the 
transmitter.
 
There was a vendor at Dayton offering DDS kits that 
had been adapted to
this purpose (driving tube rigs). A google search 
should find him.
