[AMRadio] Dreaded D-104 Element

As recently as 2 or so years ago, Radio Shack did sell a powered
element which had good frequency response, especially when you
consider that it wasn't much larger than a pencil eraser, and cost
about $5. Of course, 2 years is equal to at least 4 generations at RS.

If your D104 has the audio preamp, check here for a replacement
element kit. Remember, however, he specifies this one is for amplified
D104's.

You can also scrounge good elements from many old audio cassette
recorders, especially the larger portable models, and from cordless
telephones. Some of the telephone elements have a frequency response
that is well beyond what you would normally expect from a telephone.

Just hit 2 or 3 yard sales this weekend, and you will almost certainly
find something you can take apart in order to repair something else.

Heil makes a dynamic replacement element especially for D-104's. You
can usually
pick them up at the larger hamfests from W0BW's booth who is a Heil
dealer. I
would assume they might be available via Heil's website too. They used
to make
two types one for communication quality audio and one that had a flat
response
but only the communication's type is available now.

They have not been made in years. At one time AES in Milwaukee had a
stash
of them. I have no idea if they have any left to sell. They acquired
the
cartridges a long time ago just about the time Astatic stopped making
them.

Anyone know if there is a source of (NOS) Astatic crystal or ceramic
elements for the D104? 3'sBill-w7kxb
