Hi Terry,

If you're keeping an eye on your budget, I think you'd like a good Drake R-4 series of receiver. I have the plain-Jane R-4 here (they made the A, B, and C series after mine) and it's a nifty rig---covers all bands (for 160-meters you'll need an extra crystal), is great copying AM, & is a nice., flexible set-up with 1-KHz dial read-out...best of all you can still find one for around $125.00, or so, if you shop around (the prices rise along with the series)...

Another great receiver is the venerable Heathkit SB-301---again, 1-KHz dial read-out, super-sensitive & stable, ultar-light (for a tube rig), and even cheaper than the R-4...but it does NOT cover 160-meters, and needs the optional wideband AM IF filter.

Personally I've found the Hammarlunds to be excessively drifty, & the Collins excessively pricey...but opinions certainly vary, & I gather that that's what you're looking for at this stage, i.e. opinions...
