[AMRadio] Ebs Test failure

I'm afraid we're crusin' for a brusin' and when it happens all us city folk are
going to be up the creek without a grocery store in more ways than one. If all
the infrastructure breaks down there's could be no electrical, water, gas,
telcom, etc that we're becoming totally dependent on.
I saw a note the other day about a new virus called Ducu that mimics the Stuxnet
that was specifically aimed at Iran's nuclear production, but Ducu seems to be
aimed at controllers in our utility infrastructure and the sophistication of it
seems to indicate a well funded research effort. China maybe? An effort to crash
everything we are becoming hooked I mean dependent on maybe?
I'm afraid you're right about too much dependency on people who may not have our
best intrest at heart.
Why is it when I press 1 for English I still can't unsderstand the person on the
other end?

I work in the telecom industry, and can tell you almost everything is
digital or IP based, and it all flows over the same limited fiber network.
I doubt you can make a phone call between houses in many places in the
country that does not have the signal go digital and/or IP based.
To make matters worse, much of the provisioning and other work is done in
other countries in South America and the Philippines and other places.
And its not just the telecom industry, many banks use disaster recovery
places for backup, and they use overseas people to do the work.
Funny, but I have installed routers at DHS sites, places where they have an
actual vault for holding meetings where classified info is discussed, and I
am working with someone overseas to configure the equipment.
They do not speak English very well, but have all the passwords and so on...
We used to do the network for the FAA, radio and data, and it was some time
ago they switched everything to VoIP and routers.
The DHS has some good modern stuff, they seem to have a good budget, most of
it a waste of money most likely, but its up to modern business standards.
The lack of government regulation, or enforcement is what usually causes
problems, companies (and people) will always look for away to get more
money, doing whatever it takes.
Someone will hack into things and stop everything from working, and people
will scream why did the government let it happen....
It happens over and over again, and people just don't get it.

Yeah, I think eventually the CAP info could be relayed to cell phones via
streaming from stations but initially I think it's just for more complete
messaging to the broadcast entities.
I'm still kind of worried about the fallibility of all the high tech stuff.
Robert Heinlein said "Put all your eggs into one basket, but guard the Hell
out
of that basket". Not sure we're doing that. He also said "Technology reached
its
zenith with the invention of the fork and has been growing decadent ever
since."
Smart feller there.

As to sending alerts to cell phones...... Bill, isn't that part of the
intent
with new CAP protocol?
I think anyone who has been in broadcasting KNEW it wasn't going to go well.
Heck, when I was a C.E. here in York PA, it was common for PEMA to flub the
monthly test somehow.

sound off.
