Mark,
I am very new to AM as a mode, but find a lot of fellows that love to talk, 
and these kinds of stories are common.  That is, they are like the hams I 
knew when first licensed in 1972, none of the "hi/bye" competition type 
QSO's.  Not many seem in a hurry and will often talk till the band dies, 
which I did Sunday afternoon.  I was in a nice QSO, he was 10 over, I yacked 
a few minutes, and dead air and no signals on the bandscope at all.  So that 
has been the allure of AM to me, nice guys that like to talk, work on gear, 
and share antenna help and "war stories" like mine.
