Tnx, Don, for the story. Taking my exams (FCC) at Cleveland, I found out one
could bring their own typewriter and if they wanted to use a bug (or
keyer) for sending
they could also bring their own. As a kid, I had neither, so it
didn't matter. :-)

Not the same, but as a 16 year old, and taking the bus to Cleveland along with
my BC-611 handy-talky (to later use atop the highest skyscraper in town), I
entered the exam room for the Extra Class exam with the 611 under my arm.
The examiner said "you can't bring that thing into the room. Put it
in the hallway."
I said I wasn't going to do that since it would be stolen. He
relented and had me
put it under the exam table. :-) Later on he told me to "get your
$%^&* walkie-talkie
and get the hell outa here."
