As a retired broadcast engineer of 42 years and a ham as well, that
quasi-personal comment about wanting everyone to 'bow down' is just bull.
I do know a lot of BC guys that are not hams, and have a VERY inflated ego
about their position. They have to live with that (insert raspberry).
What I've learned over the years may well be an advantage in that I am used
to high voltage and high power, build ethics without planned obsolescence,
and a bit of inside tracking for parts and units thereof. But that is a
personal thing, and not of value to some others.
Methinks being a ham and in broadcast is about the only crossover for
happily taking your work home with you. I know of no accountants crunching
numbers for fun at home.
A ham station built along the lines of a vintage radio station gives me
comfort. That being said, it my thing and not for everyone. If you can
have the ham shack you want, so much the better. The most important thing
is the operator, not the gear, as once it leaves the antenna, your technique
says it all.
