Rick,
If your "diode substitutes" throw the voltages all off, something is wrong. The forward drop across an 866 is only about 11 volts. The drop across a single silicon diode is about 0.7 volts. Several in series would have correspondingly more drop. But the drop across a silicon diode substitute should not be that different from the drop across an 866, and if it does throw the voltages off then something else is going on.
