Few topics generate more disinformation and generally off-topic QRM than 
those concerning AC power wiring, and unfortunately it's often difficult 
for those trying to make sense of things to separate signal from 
noise.   So I wanted to thank you for your very clear and correct 
explanation of how a GCFI works.   Anyone looking for more information 
about the residual current device (RCD, aka GFI, GCFI, or ACLI, 
depending on where on the planet you live) can find schematics and more 
with a Google search.   As has been pointed out, they detect 
differential current imbalance in the hot and neutral wires, and the 
groundING (green) conductor isn't involved.
