Dave
I'm in the same situation as you. I have been using my 746PRO on the AM freqs to get a "feel' for that mode. I'm convinced it's another mode I want to add to my shack. The folks are great and very welcoming. I am waiting for NearFest up here in New England to pick up an AM station. Good luck and you can be assured, there are plenty of guys out there to help you along.

Boatanchor equipment by their very nature of generally being "old" will
require periodic maintenance. That should be taken into consideration for
your choice of equipment and your technical background.
Lots of stuff pops up all the time for sale on various reflectors, web
sites, hamfests, etc. What you are willing to invest in $$ also is
important. Are you running anything right now on AM?
