Hi Dave,
Peter's suggestion has merit but if you are wanting to get your feet wet I
would suggest that you first try AM on your current lowband tranceiver.
Many people use SS rigs and for the most part everyone is happy to see
another AM convert. Once you decided that this is a mode you want to persue
I would suggest looking at some of the Heathkit, Gonset, Eico,
Hallicrafters, Elmac, and many more to get your feet wet with a tube type
equipment.
>From there the Collins equipment would be a great step up.
Good luck and hope to see you on the AM bands soon.
By the way this Wednesday is the Collins Collectors Association First
Wednesday AM Night.
It's on 3880 and starts out on the East coast and works it's way West.
Usually an hour to 90 minutes on the East and Midwest.
Tune in and listen or if you have a rig that will do AM give checking in a
chance.
Anything that will do AM is welcome no matter who made it. You will hear all
kinds of equipment!
