Yes, it does take 2.8 khz bandwidth in a single sideband mode for optimum operation so like
analog SSTV, the bandwidth and base mode is more comparable to phone modes. Also the
operators use sideband to chat between the picture sends. So that's the thinking there
I'm sure.
Considerate operation is always needed!!
The original discussion was about the operators of the mode starting up on top of another or very near another AM or SSB conversation. They can operate any mode they choose provided they operate in a considerate manner. If the mode is digital and the ID is digital, then why aren't they allowed in the digital portion of the band? I wonder if this decision has anything to do with the wideband/narrowband argument. Also the argument is that if you change analog to digital, what mode is it? So if you transmit a digital stream, is it digital, therefore the operator should be in the digital portion of the band? The mention of them communicating by SSB is a bit trite to me. If they are using a digital mode why can't they communicate info other than pictures by digital modes? I don't believe that is what happened so fine they can operate anywhere they choose in the phone portion, but they need to use that big knob on the front of their radio if someone is already on or very near 3.713 They don't want anyone else in their passband if it messes up their bit stream just like we don't want a bit stream in our passband causing us to lose part of the transmission. Live it up and enjoy your mode!
