Early models had a small plate running across the span with a bushing
for the tuning shaft. This plate attached via two small screws to the
holes in the panel. Later models omitted this in favor of a 4:1
reduction drive for finer tuning. Sounds like yours had the 4:1 drive
installed and removed by a previous owner. This, or the removal of
said plate, will cause the tuning shaft to slop around.
