Jim has hit the nail squarely on the head!

I saw this back in the first half of the '70s in the Military, at first.

The average reading level of the Enlisted members were THEN reading at 
the 6th grade level.

I worked at the Pentagon in the late '90s, and the Officer Corps, 
(Branch NOT material!), were reading at the 8th grade level WITH degrees 
under their belt!  Their Advanced Course Training was making them get 
tutors!

Our overall education system is the root cause of where we are at.

Teachers in our youngsters schools, such as my granddaughter's, aren't 
even allowed to *suggest* that the very bright students read something 
that IS at THEIR real level!

Getting off of my old wooden crate that used to contain cleansing materials.
