An EXCELLENT example of the English written word being handled oh-so-masterfully is evident in a late 30's issue of QST, wherein the editor laments the accidental passing-away of Ross Hull...

It's sheer genius on a printed page, IMHO, a definite lost art, and---just as you observed---many people to-day would probably be absolutely clueless as to what he was saying...

This, despite our probably having more university & college graduates per capita than at any other time in our countries' mutual histories...!

Go figure.
