[AMRadio] Boat Anchor Receiver

I wonder why that is so.
My homebrew receivers use tubes, simple circuits, just B+W coil stock for 
the LO coil, and a few negative coefficient caps and they settle down in 
under 2 minutes for the miniature tube version, and about 4 minutes for the 
octal tube version that uses slug tuned coils in the LO.
It just does not seem that hard to get something stable, why did they have 
so much drift back then?
