No heresy implied Bob.
But it is quite clear that WRL stuffed 6 pounds of scheiβen in a 5 pound
bag. There's just too much to overheat that core. Been there, had it happen,
(including the fire dept!).

  Kim,

You've gotten a LOT of "great" advice.

1) Replace the original capacitors.

2) Do the burn in.

Now for the "heresy" aspect:

The power xfmr was designed for lower voltage from the wall.

     Try adding a "bucking" transformer.

Consider an "outboard" transformer for some of the filament and low
voltages.

You have one heck of a gem! Do your best to keep it alive and well!

Regarding the HQ-170. What precisely do you want/need?

I have an original manual for the HQ-170 that I obtained off "Flea-Bay".

I also have a 5MB PDF for the HQ-170A *IF* your E-mail can handle it.
