Yes Charlie, you got those convertors and the 28MC crystals from me. I'm
glad that you are making use of them.

Subject: [AMRadio] Heath XC-6 question

Howdy all,

Checked into my first Collins Collectors net last night, wow, lots of
carriers and checkins on the East Coast. Even had to use the notch on the
Mohawk to sort some out.

I picked up a Heath XC-6 and XC-2 converters to use with my Mohawk and
Seneca TX. I believe I got them from a fellow on this list. If I did, the
28MC crystals worked fine to put the 6 meter back on the 22-26 IF band of
the Mohawk. The 2 meter worked fine the first time, but did not have the
.3uv sensitivity the ARRL said it would have. Gee, a 50 year old tube
converter and doesn't meet specs, who would have known?

But, do any of you old time VHF AM folks that may have used these converters
remember a mod to the 6 meter converter on the mixer/oscillator? The normal
Heath circuit has been modified in the mixer stage to change the 'L' network
output, to a link output, and the oscillator from a simple crystal to ground
in the grid circuit to an elaborate link coupled oscillator. While this is
working OK, the output stage will not come to resonance on 22MC, the slug
wants to come all the way out of the coil, and is still climbing in output
when you reach its' limit. There is no parallel cap on this coil, just uses
the internal capacitity of the 12AT7 to bring it to resonance.

The QST online archive has nothing on mods to these units, and I have no way
of determining if the output coil has been changed. Both osc and mixer
coils just have 3 turn links wound on top of what may or may not be the
original Heath coils.

Thanks for any help.

Charlie, W4MEC in NC
