Ken Morgan, KC5DW, who only replaced the two 510 pf interstage coupling capacitors with .0047 mfd units measured the low frequency 3 dB point with his mod to be about 200 Hz.  He was measuring between the microphone input and the modulator tube grids, which includes the interstage audio transformer.  That would certainly indicate that the transformer has sufficient low frequency response.  I would recommend trying just the capacitor replacement first and seeing how that sounds before I did anything else.
