Win W5WN had his TS2000 sounding like it was plate modulated  really
great...

Motorola 2 way communications service monitor.  It can receive or generate 
on any frequency from around 100kc to 999.99mhz.  It has a lcd display for 
frequency error, am modulation, fm deviation, etc.  It also has a scope 
where you can see the recovered audio.  Most 2 way shops have one of these 
built by someone like ifr, Motorola, Cushman, etc.  I have one that was 
lightning damaged but I was able to get it working.  It also measures rf 
watts but only up to 120 a nd has a built in dummyload for 120 watts.  It 
does have a speaker to listen to recovered audio but hard not to get a 
feedback and no headphone jack.
