You are probably right.  The article in the link gives a good explanation.  
But the sales pitch about the blue glow and Edison effect looks to me like 
pure BS, on par with oxygen-free speaker cable and $600 ac power cords .

One problem I have had with high-gain tube type preamps is 60~ hum.  I  
solved it by running regulated DC on the tube filaments!
