If it has the noise elimination circuitry it's a "C" or earlier model. Also, 
check whether or not the Fast Tune knob includes a built in slip clutch.   
"C" and earlier models did not.   

The BC-342 would have been used in fixed station installations or where 115 
vac would otherwise have been   available for the power supply (SCR-197, 299, 
399 & 499 for ex.).   The 12 vdc BC-312 would have been more commonly used 
with the BC-191 xmitters (SCR-177B, 188A, 193, and 210 configurations for 
ex.).

The BC-342 and 312 receivers are virtually identical except for the power 
supplies (RA-20 in he 342 and DM-21 in the 312).   See ER #95, March 1997 for 
more.
