Field Day weekend is a good occasion to see how much of each band is wasted
due to subbanding, since there is simultaneous CW, digital and phone
activity. I just checked 40m. and noted heavy CW activity from 7000 to 7075.
There is heavy phone activity from 7150 to 7300, including some AM between
7290 and 7300. 7075-7150 is pretty much a
wasteland, with two digital-sounding signals and, in the Novice subband,
about a half dozen CW signals. As limited as 40m. is,
during an event that generates heavy QRM on all modes, 75 kc of the band is
essentially wasted due to subband restrictions.
Let's observe how much similar wastage occurs on each band during daytime
and nighttime conditions over the 24-hour period.
