You're correct about the driving impedance Mike. I used a 6V6 into a
single-ended output XFMR with 8 ohms out then into the 8 ohm winding of
a push-pull XFMR using the P-P leads to connect to the Screens and the B
lead to ground. I later found better fidelity when I used a capacitor
to couple the audio from plate of 6V6 to screen of one 807 instead of
the 8 ohm windings.

The grid to screen connection is used to make the tube act as a zero
bias
class B tube instead of class ab1 or ab2. the drive requirement is low
but
the voltage required is high hence regular class b driver transformers
can
not be used.
