Steve,
I use the old arrl handbooks, 50's to 70's,
I have a big stack of qst and 73 mags from the same timeframe,
and the best is the Bill Orr handbooks, the red and 
the yellow cover years are very good.

Building a transmitter that gets on one band is very easy
if you have something to drive it with.

Something that does 80 and 40 is also very easy.
