It is common for the bfo to block the receiver. Most receivers that do not have a product detector the
bfo is injected into the last IF stage. The avc detector detects the bfo signal as a strong carrier
(which it is) and generates a large avc voltage shutting down the receiver sensitivity. To copy SSB you
need to turn the avc off and turn down the RF gain and turn the audio gain almost all the way up. Then
ride the RF gain control to control volume.
