Russ,

Both sections of the 6AL5 are biased so that they do not conduct unless the
audio peaks at that point are greater than 6 volts.  Below that, the 6AL5 is
simply an open circuit.  I think that one can set the level pot high enough
so that this doesn't happen.

I have mine set that way I think.  This discussion may prompt me to get out
the audio oscillator and the scope.
