Charlie,  look at the drawing,  you  can't  get around the  clipping in an 
Apache.  The signal always  goes  thru  the  6AL5,  so  distortion
is always introduced,  unless you remove  or  bypass this  stage,  of
course if  you adjust  it  carefully,  it will work OK.  rewiring  the
speech amp like a DX-100  gets  you  what you need.  Russ
